"Doulas Who Do All For You"

What is a Doula?

The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth and provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. A Doula is not a medical professional and cannot assist in any medical procedures.

Benefits of Having a Doula

Studies consistently demonstrate that when doulas attend births, labor tends to be shorter, with fewer complications, resulting in healthier babies who breastfeed more easily. One of the distinctive features of having a doula is the uninterrupted support they provide. Unlike hospital staff, there are no shift changes; you receive continuous support from the doula you hire. Doulas offer emotional support, physical comfort measures, and assist the partner in meeting the birthing mother's specific needs.

A doula recognizes birth as a profound experience that a mother will cherish throughout her lifetime. They possess a deep understanding of the physiological processes of birth and are attuned to the emotional needs of a laboring woman. A doula assists the woman in preparing for and executing her birth plans, remaining present throughout the entirety of labor. They provide emotional support, physical comfort, and offer an objective perspective while ensuring the woman receives the necessary information to make informed decisions.

Furthermore, a doula facilitates effective communication between the laboring woman, her partner, and clinical care providers. Their role is perceived as nurturing and protective, aiming to safeguard the woman's positive memory of the birth experience.

Thank you for stopping by. My name is Portia Harris and grew up in Monterey Bay, California. My journey as a Doula developed after having a unexpected emergency C-section, in North Carolina of 2018. I did not feel supported and everything I thought I knew about birth that could have prepared me for a great birth experience did not come close to my actual experience. Since that time, I knew if it happened to me, it was likely to happen to another mother and to ensure that I could support them, I obtained my certifications to be a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, lactation counselor and newborn care specialist. Today I serve the DMV and Baltimore area where I also have made many great friends people and opportunities.  I am excited to support families who have experienced the lack of support education and empowerment that's needed when becoming a new mother or having a family which is why I am dedicated to my life as a doula and becoming an IBCLC, Nurse and midwife one day.  I do ensure that working together you will find the best pregnancy, birth and postpartum care to experience. So thank you for trusting us with your needs and we look forward in meeting you soon!
